Chittorgarh Fort of Rajasthan

Among the many forts in India, Chittorgarh Fort is the largest fort. In the state of Rajasthan it is the grandest and the best known fort. It is indeed the “Pride of Rajasthan”. Located in the southern part of Rajasthan, it is 112 km from Udaipur and 182 km from Ajmer. The Chittor fort is a depiction of Rajput culture and values. It sprawls majestically over a hill 180 m (590.6 ft) in height spread over an area of 280 ha (691.9 acres) above the plains of the valley drained by the Berach River. It is a standing sentinel to the courage and valor of Chittorgarh. The fort precinct with an evocative history is studded with a series of historical palaces, gates, temples and two prominent commemoration towers. These monumental ruins have inspired the imagination of tourists and writers for centuriesThe fort, plainly known as Chittor was the capital of Mewar and it is situated several kilometers by road south of Bhilwara. The Chittorgarh Fort has witnessed three bloody sieges and ‘jauhars’ (a Rajput tradition in which royal maidens and ladies immolate them in the fire to save their honor from the cruel hands of the enemy, when there is no chance of defeating the enemy). The walls and the atmosphere are still haunted with the gloom of despair, valiant pride of the Rajput queens and ladies and sheer zeal and bravery of their men who refused to cow down before the enemy.
