The initial structure of the fort was entirely completed by his descendant, Jai Singh .Amber was modified by successive rulers over the next 150 years, until the Kachwahas shifted their capital to Jaipur during the time of Sawai Jai Singh It is situated in Amber, the ancient capital of the Kachhawaha Rajputs on a hillside overlooking Maotha Lake.

In the construction of the Amber fort one can find a smooth amalgamation of Hindu and Mughal architecture. The Amber Fort is a beautiful complex of palaces, halls, stairways, pillared pavilions, gardens and temples. The Fort in the red sandstone and white marble look stunning and is the classic romantic Rajasthan fort palace. For the Amber Fort it can be very truly said that it is the classical and romantic fort with magnificent aura.The Amber Fort looks stunning, all-built in white marble and red sandstone. To add to its charm, Maotha Lake makes its foreground. The crystal mirror image of the Fort, on the still waters of the lake, seems to be a beautiful illusion. Amber Fort is usually pronounced as Amer Fort. In 1592, construction of the Fort was started by Raja Man Singh I. However, the Amber Fort took its present form during the reign of Raja Jai Singh I.

The Fort is built in unique artistic style. The appearance of the fort in the outer side is very different from the way it looks interiorly. From outside the walls of the fort do not look beautiful. The outer appearance seems rough and withered but the interior designs are magnificent and stunning. The interior of the fort provides a soothing and warm ambience which is least expected from its outer appearance. The interiors are beautifully adorned with painted scenes of hunting and wars adorn the walls along with precious stones and mirrors set into plasters. The marvelous interior decoration of the Amer / Amber Fort is influenced by both, the Hindu and Muslim manner of ornamentation. Exquisite paintings of hunting scenes on the walls depict the temperament of the Rajputs, who were adventurous, revolutionary and self-indulgent. The magnificent setting of mirrors and the ornamentation work of the interior design with precious stone is simply astonishing and never fails to lure its visitors. The minute mirror work adds to the grand appearance and royalty of the halls. The Amer Fort undoubtedly captivates the tourists with its artistic quality of delicate work. The Fort is famous for its structures such as Diwan-E-Aam (hall for the public), Sukh Niwas, Kali Temple and Shila Mata Temple. Kali Temple, which is also known as Shila Devi Temple, forms the part of the Fort. It is renowned for its glorious past, huge silver lions and silver doors. The Hall of Public Audiences, Diwan-I-Aam is a pavilion with double row of columns. Ganesh Pol, another feature of the Fort, directs the way to the inhabited apartments of the King. The Hall of Victory, Jai Mandir has a stunning ceiling comprised of mirror work and an inlaid panel. The Fort has numerous other halls and pavilions with their own specific attraction.
The Kesar Kyari, a perfectly manicured garden adds to the beauty of the Fort. Diwan-E-Aam displays the magnificent carving works with stunning pillars. Sukh Niwas and Jas Mandir apartments have very beautifully captured the Mughal and Rajput architectural genius. The Sheesh Mahal is the most exquisite creation in the Amber Fort. As the name stands, it means the Palace of Mirrors. For all the visitors, a big hall that is filled with thousands of tiny mirrors all over, never fails to amuse and lure them.  It is said that during the days of yore, a single tiny candle would illuminate the entire hall. The tiny intricate mirrors are preserved till date and look as royal as they did then.
