Taj Mahal…its pristine beauty

tourist placesTaj Mahal is the most famous and most precious architectural heritage of India. It is standing majestically on the banks of river Yamuna in Agra city of Uttar Pradesh, India. This monument is in white marble and is among the Seven Wonders of the World. It has been declared World Heritage Site by UNESCO. Arguably it is India’s most popular tourist attraction. In fact for many outsiders visiting India, it is the most irresistible spot to visit. It has great tourist attraction not only for the Indians but for the foreigners also it is the most favored tourist destination. Its main hallmarks are its beauty, grandeur and elegance of the structure and can be said to be most well preserved and architecturally amazing mausoleum in the world. Built entirely of white marble, the beauty of Taj never fails to mesmerize its visitors.

Taj Mahal is the most enduring symbol of human love. It was built by the Mughal emperor Shah Jahan. He had erected this mausoleum in memory of his beloved wife Mumtaz Mahal who died in A.H. 1040 (A.D. 1630). The construction of Taj Mahal was started in A.D. 1632 and completed at the end in 1648 A.D. Nearly twenty thousand workmen had been employed and they worked for seventeen years. For their accommodation a small town named after the deceased empress, Mumtazabad which is now known as Taj Ganj was built adjacent to Taj Mahal. Regarded as the exceptionally beautiful architectural wonder, the Taj Mahal represents a fine blend of Mughal, Persian, Central Asian and Islamic architecture. The Taj is celebration of woman built in marble and that’s the way to appreciate it. The beauty of Taj is best described by the words of English poet, Sir Edwin Arnold, as “Not a piece of architecture, as other buildings are, but the proud passions of an emperor’s love wrought in living stones.”

The construction of Taj Mahal is on 313 square feet marble platform which is enclosed within a high boundary wall. It stands on a raised red sandstone, square platform with its four corners truncated, forming an unequal octagon. The four tall minarets are the most remarkable feature of Taj Mahal which is at the four corners of the structure. The inside of the Taj Mahal is decorated with inlaid design of flowers and calligraphy using precious gems such as agate and jasper. The design of the marble floor is of black and white chessboard and there is the majestic dome at the middle. Built under the supervision of Persian architect Ustad Isa, the building in white marble has the verses of the holy Quran on it, with the gate being crowned by 22 small doves. The level of sophistication used in the overall decoration of the Taj Mahal make everyone spell bound. The jewel inlaid cenotaph of the queen lies at the lower chamber within the dome. It was later that the grave of Shah Jahan added.

The beauty of this wonderful architecture called the Taj Mahal enhances manifold during a full moon light when the Taj sparks like a bright jewel in the light of the full moon. If viewed from across the Yamuna river on a foggy morning the Taj appears as if suspended. Due to its unique setting against the river Yamuna it is believed that the Taj changes its color during different hours of the day. The Taj is pinkish in the morning, milky white in the evening and golden when the moon shines.

Summing up we can say that Taj Mahal is an architectural wonder in pristine white marble and it was designed to represent an earthly replica of one of the houses of paradise. Its impeccable marble facing, embellished by a remarkable use of exquisite surface design is a showcase for the refined aesthetic. It has been very correctly described as “one of the most elegant and harmonious buildings in the world”.
